PRESIDENT’S UPDATE

*JOIN US FOR THE ALL-SCHOOL HEALTH EXPOThere will be a Health Expo this Wednesday, 2/28, from 9:00-10:00 am and then again from 5:30-6:30 pm in the Weston Middle School Library.  This is a GREAT opportunity to experience the K-12 Health Education Program, obtain meaningful resources and speak to health education teachers and school counselors.

*SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS’ FIGHT AGAINST CANCER:  Join us on Tuesday, March 6th at 9:45 am in the WMS Library for our regular PTO meeting PLUS a brief but important presentation from WHS students who are spearheading a new initiative in town to help fight cancer.  The event will be family-focused at Lachat Farm on June 9th and will raise money for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center while helping to promote a healthy lifestyle for cancer prevention.  Our STUDENTS are stepping forward to organize this.  Please let’s give them our wholehearted support.

WMS SCHOOL BUDGET PRESENTATION: On Tuesday, February 6th at 9:45 a.m., the WMS PTO sponsored a school budget presentation/Q&A Session led by Dr. McKersie, Dan Doak and other school leaders.  This informative session dealt with specific questions from Middle School Parents.  Some answers included: “There is NO plan to increase class sizes or cut the theater budget”; “We must increase budget monies towards SPED.  This will help students and budget overall in the long term”; “Some changes to the timing and structure of Mock Trial and after school sports will make these programs much more cost effective for the Middle School”;  “Capital improvements to the building are coming—but not this year.  Improvements needed are significant and they have to wait for now”. For the complete slide presentation from this meeting, please visit:  LINK

PHILANTRHOPY UPDATE: Recent and Upcoming Votes   WE CAN’T VOTE WITHOUT YOUR VOICE.  PLEASE ATTEND THE MARCH 6th MEETING AT 9:45 in the WMS LIBRARY!!!

Some key Philanthropy votes are upcoming in March.  Additional votes were taken at the WMS PTO February Meeting.  $1,050 was unanimously approved to help the WMS Robotics Team continue on their path to victory.  They have qualified for the Championship Tournament.  This program initially started as a pilot funded by the PTO and now it is largely school and parent supported with some PTO help if needed—this year’s team is the largest to date—a testament to early funding and School-Parent-Student-PTO collaboration!  $2,000 was also unanimously approved for funding of the WHS Science Laboratory.  In the near-term, this lab will support the high-level inquiry efforts of those WHS students who qualify. However, the long-range plan is to use this lab to help the overall growth of STEM from Hurlbutt through High School. Currently, labs are overcrowded and underfunded.  Students wanting to pursue inquiry must travel to other labs with proper equipment to do so.  The new lab will allow our High School students to work on campus and to serve as mentors for younger Weston students who want to follow a similar path. UPCOMING VOTES WILL INCLUDE: Contributions to the HES Playground; Landscaping improvements to the front of the Weston Middle School and NFHS Filming for sports and other cross-campus events (including graduation) for easy viewing and access.

SPEAK-UP: SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY DISCUSS TOUGH TOPICS: On Saturday, February 3rd, State and local Weston leaders convened to discuss everything from taxes to land use to—our schools and the budget.  Not surprisingly, it is the latter topic that dominated the conversation.  For more details see past issues of THE LINK.  Importantly, take time to watch SPEAK-UP on the Weston League of Women Voters website (lwvweston.org).
