After a contentious discussion, the Board of Education elected Gina Albert as the Board Chairperson with Ellen Uzenoff as the Board Vice-Chairperson.

The Weston Board of Education recognized Denise Harvey for eight years of outstanding service to the students, families, and staff of Weston Public Schools
The Board welcomed new Police Chief Ed Henion to town.Chief Henion emphasized open communication with the schools.
The Board approved a new High School course for the 2018-2019 School Year:Honors Science Research, which is an independent study. A lab is being outfitted now by the Weston Education Foundation to support this course.
Changing school start/end times discussion: The August 2017 BOE - Superintendent Retreat included a conversation about the possibility of changing school start and end times in Weston. The consensus reached is that altering school start/end times is challenging, but worth exploring in light of Weston’s goal of creating Healthy Learning Environments for students.
Dr. McKersie presented a report relevant to modifying the start and end times of the school day. School start time study
·The science and medical data support a later start time for older students
·there are significant logistical concerns: athletic schedules, bus schedules, traffic impact; budgetary considerations.
·The Board decided to look into the issue further before deciding how to proceed.
Dr. Craw presented the annual Gauging Student Progress Report. He emphasized that no single measure defines a student’s performance. The report focused on math, science, reading and writing.
Highlights of the report include:
·students’ ACT scores in every subject were the highest in Weston history
·kindergarten DRA levels are high
·writing mechanics and math fluency need to improve.

Board of Education Meeting 9/18/2017
Dr. McKersie and Lisa Deorio, Principal of Weston High School, opened the meeting by congratulating the four 2018 National Merit Scholarship Semi Finalists - Lindsay Kunhardt, Ellen Relac, Matthew Sydney, and Timothy Troxell. This honor reflects their exceptional scores on the PSAT tests.
The Board of Education and Dr. McKersie thanked the Weston Education Foundation for their generous donation to launch a Science Research Program.The grant, in the amount of $8,750, will provide for an Expert-in-Residence to develop the Science Research Program at Weston High School, which the District intends to develop for implementation in 2018-2019.
Mr. Mike Zuba, from Malone and MacBroom, presented an enrollment study for Weston.Mr. Zuba reviewed birth cohorts over the past 15 years. Birth rates have decreased throughout the 2000's. Mr Zuba reviewed the housing sales over the past 19 years. Housing sales have not fluctuated widely over the past number of years. The market is driven by quality of schools and education.An extensive birth analysis was completed which showed the birth vs. K In-Migration over the past 15 years.
The Drug and Alcohol Task Force: On October 26th at 7:00in the Middle School LLC, the results of the Drug and Alcohol Survey will be shared with families.Last spring a survey was sent out to students and parents for 7-12 th graders.Please join Dan Doak, Lisa Deorio and Joe Mogollon (SRO) as they present the results.

Effective School Solutions Update
·ESS provides high quality and cost-effective in-district clinical services for our students with emotional and behavioral needs -this service helps Weston to keep more student in our district rather than having to our source their educational needs.
·The BOE renewed the contract for the 2017-2018 school year
·The cost was $275,000 for the school year
